Smoggy smog smog

SMOG. This is the word of the moment.

"It's a bit smoggy today" we said, at the start of September.

"Ooh, isn't this smog hanging around?" a week later.

"Erm, the smog is still here..." after another week.

Now it's more a case of "When is this BLOODY SMOG going away?" (repeated ad nauseum, interspersed with rhetorical questions of "how can they let this carry on?" and "WHY ISN'T ANYONE DOING ANYTHING ABOUT IT?!" etc etc)

Being British, we do like to have a moan about the weather, but this is perhaps the crappiest 'weather' we've ever encountered. I say 'weather', because it's not weather in the normal sense of the word. The weather is actually sunny, so the view from our apartment should look like this:

But thanks to the annual (man made) forest-clearing fires burning in Indonesia, we are buried underneath a layer of SMOG and our view is actually more like this:

It smells as bad as it looks.

Apparently it has normally cleared by the start of October, but due to the lack of rain we've had recently (thanks El Nino) it's hanging around. We are now informed by various locals that it might stay until as late as the end of November (we're trusting their wisdom on this).

So for now we are mainly indoors, praying for rain. And watching boxsets on Netflix to pass the time.

UPDATE:  I drafted this a couple of evenings ago, and yesterday we actually saw BLUE SKY for the first time in weeks! Although it's smoggy again this morning... :-(
